Nerves systemYesterday was NervesConf. It is a tiny conference. The embedded Linux niche of the Elixir ecosystem. Healthy but small enough that I don't think it can live on its own. It has only existed attached to other events. This year, GigCity Elixir. A lovely smaller conference in Chattanooga, Tennesee. Organized by my lovely friend Maggie and Bruce Tate. I am having an absolutely wonderful time. An interesting thing is that the number of people actively working with, developing and evolving Nerves itself is fairly small. But due to the way embedded development works almost every company that does Nerves also ends up needing to expand the ecosystem a bit, at least the ones that engage the community and share things openly. When the people that are the most engaged with Nerves get together like this there are sparks flying. The work is generally remote, latency of comms, opportunities to chat are kind of sparse and dominated by day-to-day work. Suddenly people are essentially idle, primed to interact and close together and you can see ideas start to move, exchanges get intense and interesting. Barriers are low, potential energy is high. It is exciting to see and be in. Don't underestimate small but specific events and experiences. Never underestimate the value of engaging with people. If you are curious about Nerves, get in the Elixir Forum, get at me on here, start trying shit. It is the most fun I've had with Elixir and I have had a lot of fun with Elixir in general. You can reach me on the Fediverse where I'm @lawik@fosstodon.org or by responding to this email to lars@underjord.io. Thanks for reading. I appreciate it. |
