Nothing quite like a massive cold No images? Click here I’m running a fever and have cancelled everything on the calendar since yesterday. This is what you get for having a kid in preschool. Doesn’t seem to be Corona. I still want to send this out I’ll just be quite brief. There have been a new BEAM Radio episode, I’ve posted a new blogpost. Check beamrad.io and underjord.io respectively. Links are made by people that feel good. I still have some opportunities for Elixir developers in Sweden and the US respectively. Check Underjord.io and go to Jobs in the menu to read about it. These are companies I’ve personally vetted and that support my work. If you want to know when new opportunities come up, you can keep reading this or sign up to the job-specific list. I'm still open for more companies that want to find Elixir developers with my help and make their presence known in the Elixir ecosystem. More details here. Does everything break if you get sick?As a self-employed person this is a loaded question. I got hit with this yesterday and it will lead to some days I can’t charge for. That’s really the worst of it. It’ll delay some efforts I had planned as well but I doubt anyone will be angry. It won’t jeopardize anything. This stuff isn’t clearcut though. I went to work thursday morning in spite of feeling like crap because I had an urgent, quite important thing to turn around for a client. Not doing it would have put one my client’s staff in a very awkward public situation. But then I cleared the deck of everything else, bashed that out, and then went home to feel sorry for myself and rest. I plan my days and weeks quite tightly. Every day is packed with slots of either code work, meeting or other work. There’s very little space. That makes the prospect of clearing out most of two days a bit painful. But if I can’t do that I don’t have a very resilient business. If what you do is impactful and positive to someone there will always be a noticeable and negative impact if you have to stop and take a break. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done. So if you are sick, take the break, rest, recover. I know too many of us push through, especially in remote work. Consider the flu, the cold and whatever else to be your Chaos Monkey. They will rob your of useful faculties and if your business/employer can’t handle you being out for a week that tells you something about your situation. It’s fine to contact me at lars@underjord.io or on Twitter where I'm @lawik. Answers may be significantly delayed as I lay around on the couch watching YouTube between feverish naps. Thank you for reading, I appreciate your attention. - Lars Wikman |
